Welcome to Matt's Movies! This is where I write about movies that I love.

Body Double [1984]

Brian De Palma

Brian De Palma is one of the coldest to ever do it and Body Double not only secures that fact but makes it even more true. This movie is just so good. Really just right up my alley. One of those movies that makes you mad you hadn't seen it sooner. The mystery and intrigue in the story is so obviously inspired by old Hitchock and noir flicks it almost feels like parody [good]. But then you shove those story beats into this insane 80s Hollywood porno-flick universe and you come out with something that is just so cool and unique. The Pino Donaggio score turned my brain into soup as well [good]. Everything is running at a 10 from the set dressing to the practical effects and so on. It is really just a clinic and it is always such a pleasure to watch another BDP movie, I desperately need to see more. Also there is basically a music video for Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood in the middle of the movie and it just rocks so hard.

Phenomena [1985]

Dario Argento

Phenomena rocks. I unfortunately have not seen many Dario Argento movies for some reason but after this they have shot to the top of my radar. This movie has one of the most intersting hooks I have ever had the priviledge of seeing. It's a girl who can talk to bugs and uses that power to find a killer. What more can you truly ask for. Donald Pleasence is in this too and he is wheelchair bound and has a chimp assistant. I mean come on. There are also a bunch of weird Motorhead and Iron Maiden needledrops that come in at the most unexpected moments and it is really just one of the craziest creative descision I have ever seen in a movie. Nothing can prepare you for the last 20 minutes or so of this movie. Most of the movie until that point is suprisingly grounded for the concept, but by the end all the holds come off and it just boils over into pure insanity. Incredible movie.
